Breakthrough Austin strives to empower all our students to reach their college dreams. This summer, Breakthrough seeks talented, student-centered teachers who want to work hard, take risks, have fun, and make a difference!
About Breakthrough
Breakthrough Austin creates first-generation college graduates. The program admits students in middle school and makes a long-term commitment to helping them graduate from high school and enter college by providing academic summer programs, individualized academic support and enrichment and college-prep activities for students and families. Breakthrough Austin operates two summer sites: one for rising 6th and 7th graders at Manor New Tech High School and one for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders at the University of Texas at Austin.
Internship Description
Breakthrough seeks enthusiastic, creative, and successful high school and college students to teach and mentor during our academic summer sessions. Under the guidance of seasoned teaching professionals, high school and college students will teach English, math, social studies, or science to classes of eight to ten students. Teachers will also serve on committees, lead study skills lessons, and design Explorations (electives) classes for their students.
Low cost summer housing is available through a partnership with College Houses, Inc., and Breakthrough teachers live in “co-ops.” Food is provided, and three hours of “labor” are required each week.
Beginning in Summer 2012, all Breakthrough Austin summer teachers will be AmeriCorps members for the duration of their work in the Summer Program (June through August). After that term of service, members are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (currently valued at $1,468) that can be applied towards educational costs such as student loans or college tuition. This will be in addition to a stipend of $2,000.
