After School Homework Helpers and Tutors: Help students build their knowledge and academic skills, providing them with the tools to be successful students. Tutoring takes place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 at the Breakthrough office. Successful tutors commit to a regular schedule every week, volunteering as few as 2 hours and as many as 12 hours per week.
High School and College Application Coaches: Support our students by reviewing their high school and college applications. Coaches meet with students several times a semester to help keep students on a timeline, offer application feedback, and help the students express themselves persuasively and articulately.
Newsletter and Website Volunteers: Breakthrough needs one or two dedicated volunteers to produce articles and the layout for Breakthrough’s quarterly newsletter. These (or other) volunteers will also update our website with new articles, event announcements, and press. We are in particular need for a volunteer with knowledge of WordPress website design.
Project and Special Events Volunteers: Provide critical support to a host of projects and events such as celebrations and workshops throughout the year. This opportunity is especially convenient for tutors looking for a shorter-term commitment, a more flexible schedule, or a particular project to support.
Administrative Associates: Support Breakthrough staff with daily tasks, projects, outreach to families, workshop planning and resource preparation. Successful associates commit to a regular weekly schedule; however, the number of hours varies depending on the schedule of the volunteer.
Corporate Representatives: Representatives help initiate employee-giving programs at their respective offices or organizations.
In addition, please check out the 1 Hour For Kids Video. 1 Hour For Kids is an iniative launched by United Way Capital Area, a partner organization. This initiative brings together eight nonprofits that specialize in providing mentors and tutors to vulnerable youth. These eight organizations work with kids in different ways, but all of their programs have shown the positive effect of connecting youth to supportive adults.
