Summer Teaching Fellows: Who else is going to let them know it’s cool to be smart?
Breakthrough—A Princeton Review “Top Ten internship”—seeks enthusiastic, creative, and successful college students to teach and mentor classes of six or seven 7th or 8th graders for six weeks during summer 2008 on UT’s campus. No prior teaching experience is required. Teaching fellows teach one core course—math, English, social studies, or science—as well as an elective of their own design. Breakthrough is a national education program that prepares high-potential, low-income middle schoolers to become first-generation college students.
Breakthrough is a paid internship. Austin teaching fellows receive a $2000 stipend.
To learn more, attend an upcoming information session in January or February at your school. Check back in January for details.

Read what former teaching fellows have said about their experience:
“The best aspect of Breakthrough is working with the kids! We build such a sense of community, and by the end of the summer you are so sad to see the kids go. You really get to know each of your students as an individual.”
“I have never learned so much about leadership . . . I fell in love with the program itself. Its positive energy and motivation to support our students on their path to college is so relentless--so sincere. I fell in love with teaching.”
“I think I’ve developed a belief in an educational system that nurtures a child, not simply as a student, but also as a whole person. Before this summer, I thought educational utopia was but a dream and now I’ve realized that it is a reality and one that every child deserves.”
Master Teachers
Breakthrough seeks outstanding educators to serve as Master Teachers for Breakthrough’s young teachers (ages 16 – 23). Breakthrough Master Teachers set the standards of classroom teaching in our program. They play a vital role in training and supporting our faculty, refining and developing the summer curriculum, and shaping Breakthrough’s learning environment.
