Communications Intern
INTERNSHIP TITLE: Communications Intern
SUMMARY:
Breakthrough Austin seeks a talented and enthusiastic intern to assist Breakthrough’s Development and Communications staff in implementing the organization’s year-long communications plan. Using a combination of storytelling, community outreach, and media relations tasks, the PR and Communications intern will be instrumental in calling a community to action, as volunteers, donors, and supporters. This unpaid position is temporary and part-time.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Write newsletter articles, press releases, blog posts, fundraising appeals, and testimonials and prepare these for publication or archival in a Story Bank
- Maintain and update a media contacts list
- Research press opportunities and pitch stories to media outlets
- Coordinate interviews with students, family, staff members, and volunteers to capture success stories and testimonials
- Document events with photo or video
- Engage in Breakthrough’s social media channels, uploading compelling quotes, excerpts, videos, or photos, and encouraging interaction with the community
- Coordinate media coverage at community events
- Research topical news stories to which there may be a Breakthrough connection and an opportunity for press coverage
- Research current statistics and trends on poverty and education to inform articles
- Represent Breakthrough at community outreach events and fairs
- Support special projects/events as needed
- Provide support with pick-up and delivery of materials and supplies
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, knowledgeable of journalistic practices, and familiarity with social media and content management software such as WordPress
- Skills in photography and video production are also welcome but not required
- Interest in or experience in journalism and an enthusiasm for creating compelling stories that share our organization’s message
- The ability to quickly establish rapport and be culturally sensitive
- Ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team effort and independently with minimal supervision
- Strong commitment to the mission and values of the organization
- Current student or Bachelors’ degree from an accredited four-year university
HOURS, LOCATION, AND COMPENSATION:
- Breakthrough is a fast-paced, needs-responsive environment.
- Hours are flexible, start date is negotiable
