Why We Exist

Breakthrough exists because all students, regardless of where they live, their economic low-income circumstances, or their ethnicity, deserve the opportunity to go to college, but statistics say the low-income students will not without significant intervention. Today, only six percent of middle school students who happen to come from low-income communities in Central Texas will graduate from college.

Children who are born into poverty do not have the same educational opportunities as those who are not. Parents’ low educational attainment has been shown to predict persistent, generational poverty for their children more consistently than any other factor.

The research is clear: the best path out of poverty is a college degree. The median lifetime earnings of an individual with a college degree are 75 percent higher than those of an individual with a high school diploma alone.
