Mission & Vision

There are many important milestones on the journey to higher education. Breakthrough empowers students to stay on track.

Breakthrough Austin creates first-generation college graduates.

Philosophy

Our philosophy is built on the belief that there are no quick fixes and that early, long-lasting interventions can make the difference between dropping out of high school or going to college.

Our Program

The Breakthrough program is data-driven and relationship-based. Our combination of individualized case management, rigorous programming, a “do whatever it takes” philosophy, and performance management allows Breakthrough to address low-income students’ unique academic needs and personal circumstances as they work to become the first in their families to go to college.

Breakthrough admits students in middle school and provides intensive, academically rigorous programming for three to four summers, year-round case management, and personalized, long-term support.

Key Programs: Summer programming is taught by exceptional college and high school students who serve as outstanding role models. In addition, Breakthrough’s core services include school year support and advocacy, individualized case management, after school tutoring and homework help, Saturday academic programs, test preparation, mentoring, college counseling and guidance, and college persistence support.

Who We Serve

Each year Breakthrough admits a new class of low-income students from campuses that feed into some of Austin’s lowest performing high schools. In 2011, we are serving nearly 500 students in grades six through twelve, as well as our first four classes of college-going high school graduates. Nearly all Breakthrough students will be first-generation college graduates.

Why Does Breakthrough Work?

Breakthrough works because we provide support that is intensive, comprehensive, personalized, and sustained.
